Taylor Lake
Distance: 13.2km
Elevation Gain: AllTrails says 912, but I only recorded 789m
My rating: moderate
Remoteness: You will see other people on this hike!
Taylor Lake is a day hike that I often recommend to all levels of hiking. This one can also be done as an overnight hike. The distance (and sometimes muddiness) of the trail can be a challenge to individuals who don’t hike often, but it can be done by anyone who set’s their mind to it! No scrambling or climbing is involved, and the relatively gradual slope makes this hike doable for varying skill and fitness levels. It’s also easy to find, as the parking lot is just off of Highway 1 and well signed.
It is impossible to get lost on this hike, as the trail is maintained and signed anywhere you need it to be! The majority of your time with be spent hiking through the forest, so if you’re a big fan of trees, this is the hike for you! The elevation gain remains relatively consistent throughout the hike, and there is lots of space to take breaks if you need them.
Your hike will also be accompanied by the lovely sound of running water. No creek crossings are needed, as there are bridges any time you need them.
You will often see this hike listed as one of the best larch hikes in Banff. However, the larches will make you wait until much closer to the lake. Although the larches are beautiful (as always), this hike wouldn’t be my #1 recommendation for a larch hike for that reason!
You will know you’re close to the lake when the trail flattens, and you enter an open meadow.
Once you reach the lake, there are plenty of picnic benches to sit at and take in the view! Taylor Lake is also a backcountry camp site, so if you’re lucky enough to book this site you will get to enjoy the lake long after the crowds clear out!
On a hot day, or you’re feeling brave, this is a great spot for a quick swim!
