Evan-Thomas, which is also sometimes referred to as the “Green Monster” is a local winter favourite, but is also available at any time of the year.  We tracked this hike to be about 11.5km out and back with 550m of elevation.  This hike is family friendly, but does require balancing along steep and icy cliff edges, with the help of a chain or rope.  It can feel slightly sketchy for anyone not used to hiking.  If this doesn’t sound appealing to you, you have the option to turn around before this section, or choose a different hike.

The beginning of this hike follows a flat, wide horse trail through the trees for about 1.7km.

The trail then splits into a horse trail to the left, and the hiking path, which is a sharp right.  You end up at a small bridge, which brings you to a path that leads to a large river valley.

The path then continues following the creek, with easy crossings in various places. It ends up entering in between large rock walls, with plenty of waterfalls or ice formations to catch your eye.

Once you hit the first small waterfall, this is where the path climbs up the left hand side of the cliff.  Chains and sturdy ropes are available to cling to, to make the cliff edge feel much less treacherous.  Cramp ons are a must in this section in the winter, as the slippery cliff edge is not easy in regular footwear.  Trust your feet!

The remainder of the hike continues to follow the absolutely amazing creek. The difficult part is over at this point, and you can enjoy a nice flat trail. However, you will be taking lots of photo breaks, as the valley is extremely photogenic.

The path concludes at the “Green Monster”, a perfectly suited name for the ice flow you will see. There is plenty of places to sit and enjoy the view and take in all the colours. You can also take some epic pictures.

Just look at those colours!
