Smutwood
Distance: 20 km (Out and back)
Elevation Gain: 960 m
Rating: Hard
Remoteness: This is a relatively popular hike; you will likely run in to other groups.
This trail initially follows an old road for about 2.5km, and then continues alongside Commonwealth Creek. This part of the trek is relatively flat, and not the most exciting start to a hike. It can feel long and tedious, especially on the return trip. We recommend bringing a mountain bike to get through this part faster. Just lock your bike to a tree when you want to start walking!
Once you reach the creek, you continue alongside it for about another 4.5km. This gives you the opportunity to see the above waterfall, and meander through the forest. This part of the trail also consists of very little elevation gain, making it easy to enjoy your surroundings.
The path veers right(west) at the base of Mount Birdwood, which marks the beginning of your ascent. No route finding is necessary, as the upward path is obvious and easy to follow. The rest of this hike is a solid workout, but the incredible views make it worthwhile. We recommend taking your time to conserve your energy and enjoy all the views this hike has to offer.
Once the first section of the climb levels out, your first view of Birdwood Lakes will become visible. The path continues left, along the side of the slope. Keep your eye out for bears in this area, as this is bear country. We recommend going in a group to reduce your risk. In the fall, the yellow and orange foliage around the ice blue lake is a site to behold!
Once around the lakes, the path continues to require very little route finding. On a clear day, the summit of the peak is visible, making it easy to see your final destination. This area is so beautiful, it’s hard not to stop and take a picture every couple of seconds.
The final push to the top can feel a bit exposed to anyone new to hiking, and loose rock can make the path feel precarious. Towards the summit, the path is less visible and easy to follow, and the scramble can feel spicy depending on which route you take. As always, we recommend taking your time, and bringing the right equipment to keep your confidence!
