We recommend Chester Lake to anyone looking for a hike they can do at any time of the year. The summer offers the chance to see Alberta’s beautiful wildflowers. The fall gives you the opportunity to gaze upon the wonderful oranges and yellows of the native larch trees. Finally, the winter offers beautiful snowcapped peaks and a great snowshoeing route. You can’t go wrong no matter what time of year you decide to try this one! This hike is 9.3km out and back, with 433m of elevation gain.
The trail has minimal incline, so it’s great for people of all ages and hiking abilities. The path is also extremely well marked and easy to follow. However, due to this, this hike is a busy one. If you’re hoping to escape crowds, this isn’t the hike for you.
The initial gradual incline continues for approximately 2.5km of switchbacks through the trees. There is one 20m section that is slightly steeper, which can get slippery in the winter or after heavy rainfall. However, this section is doable with snowshoes/crampons, and the help of the surrounding trees. This is the only steep section of the hike.
The trees then open into a taste of the upcoming valley. You get gorgeous views of the surrounding peaks. This section is relatively flat and offers a slow meandering creek to give you the sound of running water. After another short section of trees, the path opens into a larger valley. This is a site to behold in the fall with all the oranges of the grass and trees. On a windy day, there is not much reprieve from the cold, so bring layers!
Once across the valley, you end up at Chester Lake, where you can snag a spot for lunch and a beer. This is a perfect spot for a nap, reading a book, or any other relaxing activity you can think of. There are plenty of trees to give you shelter from any cold wind.
If you’re feeling up to it, we highly recommend continuing along the pathway to the Elephant Rocks about 300m away. These rocks are especially interesting in the winter when they have some snow cover. We enjoy climbing them! We definitely recommend trying this local favorite at least once in your lifetime!
