If you’re looking for a great view of Spray Lakes, this is the hike for you! This hike is 9.2km out and back with 1342m of elevation, meaning the incline is no joke. The hike is initially a gradual incline, but soon becomes a steep ascent. The ascent isn’t technically challenging, just more of a physical challenge. However, this hike offers many scenic places for breaks (and beers!).
Up until Read’s Tower, be weary of slippery dirt and exposed roots. We recommend taking your time to prevent slipping, as well as to conserve your energy for the real fun! Read’s Tower is a great “middle” of the ascent spot for a solid break, with an unbeatable view, and marmots making lots of noise. It also provides a bit of shelter from the wind, which is a bonus!
The next leg of the hike becomes sheer rock. It can be chilly up there without any tree coverage, so we recommend bringing lots of layers. Route finding can be difficult through the rock field, but a general upward direction will do the trick! The weather station is a great landmark to aim towards if you’re having difficulty. Take your time and remember to stop and admire the views when your legs need some rest! It’s a slog of a hike.
The weather station is a great place to take shelter from the wind if you need it, and another great resting point. As an added bonus, the views are spectacular from here. While sheltering from the wind, you can study your route to the summit.
Continuing with the trend of this hike, the last stretch past the weather station is a steep scramble. We promise that it is absolutely worth the climb if your legs can handle the heat. The surrounding views are stunning!
Poles are a definite must for the descent, as the steep rock is a test for your knees! Bragging rights are definitely earned if you finish this hike!
