Mount Burke

Distance: 10.3km (Out and back)

Elevation Gain: 900 m

Rating: Moderate

Remoteness: This hike can be quiet!

Mount Burke is a fantastic day hike to for anyone wanting a view without having to do a scramble to get there.  This hike is about 10.3km with 900m of elevation gain, and is an out and back trail.  This is a great route for hikers of any level, as there is minimal exposure and lots of opportunity to take breaks.

The trail starts next to a scenic campsite, and doesn’t take much time before the elevation gain begins.  The initial view looks over a nice valley and soon enters tree coverage.

The hike through the trees is a straight shot for 1-2km, giving you full view of the hill you have to climb.  This can be a bit of a mind game, but the hike is short enough that there is ample time for breaks.  From there, it enters to switch backs in the trees for another few kilometers.  Once out of the tree line, there is a series of switch backs amongst big boulders.  The path is easy to follow and has very little loose rock, making the most difficult part the elevation gain.

The nice part about the end of this hike, is anywhere you take a break you’re going to get a great view.  There is plenty of opportunity to take epic pictures.

The top of this hike is marked by an old run-down fire watch station.  It is extremely windy up there, so the small amount of coverage from the station is a much needed shelter from the cold.  It also makes for more neat photos.

The wind unfortunately makes it tough to spend a long time at the top, but lower down there is plenty of places for lunch and a beer.  We really enjoy this hike, and hope you do too!
